You’re probably going to think these tips are all things you’ve heard before, but I urge you not to glaze over them! They really do make a huge impact on your health and weight.
1. Do something active every day.
Find something you enjoy so you won’t skip it! Yes, resistance training and high intensity interval training (HIIT) are the most effective forms of exercise for dropping body fat, but if you can’t stand them you can still get good results from other types of exercise. The best type of exercise is the one that you will actually do.
2. Spend more time in the kitchen.
Real food is what your body thrives on, and it involves preparation and cooking. Yes, it can be time-consuming, but isn’t your health and happiness worth it? Try switching processed food for home-cooked food. Instead of eating a store-bought item like a muesli bar for morning tea at work, make something from scratch in bulk on the weekend like a healthy banana bread. Or, instead of having a processed cereal for breakfast, make your own granola or fry up some eggs in coconut oil and eat them on a piece of home-made paleo bread.
3. Get enough sleep.
Prioritise this, please! Sleep affects everything about your body. In terms of weight loss, if you don’t have enough sleep at night, you will find yourself feeling more hungry, experiencing more cravings and not feeling as satiated during the day. This is due to your appetite control hormones ghrelin and leptin getting out of whack. The optimum amount of sleep for each person is individual, but is usually within the range of 7-9 hours. I tend to find that the more exercise you do, the more sleep you’ll require, so factor this in if you’re being really active at the moment.
Before you look for some exciting, new or different program to help you lose weight, ask yourself if you’ve really tried the healthy habits above? They may not have the big-budget marketing campaigns as those slim teas, nifty new exercise gadgets and weight-loss pills advertised on TV, but trust me: they work!
