Looking for a fun, family-friendly getaway just a couple of hours from Perth? Cervantes is a hidden gem on Western Australia’s Coral Coast—and it’s packed with natural beauty and adventure perfect for families with young kids.

We recently spent 4 days exploring Cervantes with our three children, and we were blown away by how much there was to see and do. In this post, we’re sharing our top 4 family-friendly things to do in Cervantes, plus some tips to help you plan your own trip.

1. The Pinnacles Desert

No visit to Cervantes is complete without a stop at the Pinnacles Desert! These towering limestone formations are unlike anything else in Australia and feel a bit like landing on another planet.

I recommend you drive through the park but stop to get out and walk along the paths lots. Our kids loved climbing around (safely) and pretending they were on an adventure quest.

🎟️ Entry is via Nambung National Park—bring your parks pass if you have one.

2. Hangover Bay

If you’re after a beautiful, quiet beach with clear water and white sand, Hangover Bay is a must. It’s only a short drive from Cervantes and inside the Nambung National Park.

The beach is perfect for sandcastle building, shell collecting, and swimming.

🩴 What to bring: towels, sun protection, and a picnic. There are toilets and shady picnic tables too.

3. Lake Thetis & the Stromatolites

This was such a unique stop but maybe a little boring for our kids! Lake Thetis is home to ancient stromatolites, which are living fossils believed to be some of the oldest life forms on Earth.

There’s a flat, easy walking trail around the lake that’s not too challenging for little legs, and plenty of signs with educational facts along the way.

🧺 Tip: Bring a stroller or carrier if your toddler gets tired walking, and pack hats—the path is very exposed!

4. Have a Meal at the Lobster Shack

On our first day after the long drive from Perth, we were all ready for some good food—and the Lobster Shack didn’t disappoint! This spot is well-known for its fresh lobster, but also offers a great kids’ menu and a relaxed, coastal vibe that’s perfect for families.

The setting is casual and kid-friendly, with plenty of space and ocean views. We loved being able to unwind over a delicious lunch while the kids happily munched away and played on the playground.

Family Tip: The Lobster Shack can get busy during peak season, so it’s worth booking ahead or arriving early for lunch.

  • Drive time from Perth: ~2 hours 15 minutes

  • Best time to visit: Spring or Autumn (avoid peak heat)

  • Pack: Sunscreen, water, picnic food, towels, reef shoes, camera

  • Don’t forget: Your WA parks pass for access to Nambung National Park

Final Thoughts

Cervantes really surprised us with how much it had to offer for families. It’s a manageable drive, has a great mix of natural attractions and low-key activities, and gave us the kind of slow-paced, memory-making day we’re always looking for.
